Monitor The Strategic Trends
Introduction:
Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I [am] against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel. And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand. Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that [is] with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and [to] the beasts of the field to be devoured. Thou shalt fall upon the open field to be devoured. Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken [it], saith the Lord God. And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I [am] the LORD. Ezekiel 39:1-6
The ancient people called Magog are commonly believed to have been the ancestors of the Russian nation. The prophet Ezekiel spoke of an invasion of Israel by Russia, which has not yet been fulfilled. What could cause Russia to come against the tiny nation of Israel -- which has no oil and no real strategic value? This question has puzzled Bible scholars for centuries. However, recent developments in the Middle East have for the first time in history lent credence to this long-awaited prophecy.
Israel has signed a defense pact with Turkey, making Turkey its only ally in the Middle East. Turkey straddles the Bosphorus Strait, the passage way between The Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. The Black Sea is Russia's only warm water port, which is guaranteed to be open year round. It is also the heart of Russia's oil and gas exports, which in a desperate economic situation is one of the few exportable commodities other than military weapons.
Turkey and Russia have argued for years over the proper way to administer the fair usage of the Bosphorus Strait. Turkey wants to maintain total control shipping through the strait, while Russia is demanding an international commission to govern the waterway.
Turkey and Russia have also threatened war over the delivery of S-300 missiles to the island of Cyprus, and over the Russian support of Syrian-backed terrorists. The rhetoric between the two nations has been fierce at times and now tiny, non-strategic Israel has agreed to the mutual defense of Turkey. Russia is also aligning herself with Iran.
Other events in Russia, such as the changes in government leaning back toward a communist-style government, should give Israel and her western allies cause for concern. The Magog prophecy appears to be more likely when the current events in Russian are examined in detail.

China And Russia Making Gas and Trade Deals - Russia and China bolstered their close but increasingly imbalanced relationship on Tuesday when Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin ushered through a tentative gas supply agreement and deals worth $3.5 billion. Putin's talks with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao also covered the international hotspots on which the countries share many views, but with China's economy steaming ahead while Russia has lagged during the global downturn, they focused on nurturing ties in trade and energy.
Russia Still No Respecter of Human Rights - On Tuesday, two more bodies of human rights workers were found in the southern republic of Chechnya, this time in the trunk of a car. This comes less than a month after the shocking death of Natalya Estemirova, a 50-year-old human-rights campaigner whose body was dumped by the side of a road...
Russia Calls For “Supranational Currency” To Replace the U.S. Dollar - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is hosting back-to-back summits of developing economies in Yekaterinburg, in the Ural Mountains that divide Europe and Asia, as he seeks to lessen the world economy's dependence on the US dollar. Medvedev and Hu will hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the first summit of so-called BRIC nations.
Our Friends the Russians? - President Obama's secret letter to Russian president Dmitri Medvedev has, as promised, "pressed the reset button" on U.S.–Russian relations. The president has offered to abandon America's planned deployment of an anti-missile shield in Eastern Europe in exchange for Russia's help against Iran's nuclear-weapons program. This is an enormous diplomatic blunder that will encourage the very worst sort of conduct from Russia — and Iran.
Russia Continues to Devalue Its Currency - Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet leader, warned Russia faced "unprecedentedly difficult and dangerous circumstances" and could be "heading into a black hole." "It is not clear what the fate of our rouble will be or if society has sufficient financial and moral resources," he said.
Russian Professor Predicts End of US - Russian state media have recently amplified the voice of Russian academic Igor Panarin, who has been predicting the US will fall apart in 2010. Panarin argues that an economic and moral collapse will trigger a civil war and the eventual breakup of the US. In recent years the Kremlin has blamed Washington for everything from instability in the Middle East to the global financial crisis. [The old Cold War animosity has certainly not disappeared, and Moscow seems only too hopeful to see the US fall.]
US Warns Russia Not to Sell Missiles To Iran - U.S. officials said Monday that they want answers from Russia on whether it is selling advanced surface-to-air missiles to Iran, a move the U.S. insists could threaten American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Russia Calls for Regional Cooperation with Iran - Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Yakovenko said on Friday that his country calls for enhancing level international and regional cooperation with Iran. Iran's Ambassador to Russia Mahmoud-Reza Sajjadi said that making UN and international organizations free from the domination of unilateralist powers is a must. He also expressed Iran's readiness to strengthen Tehran-Moscow ties in the international era.
Russia To Build Missiles That Evade US Defense - Russia's military is planning to upgrade its missiles to allow them to evade American weapons in space and penetrate any prospective missile shield, a Russian general said Monday. The Kremlin has fiercely opposed the U.S. plan to deploy a battery of 10 missile interceptors in Poland and a related radar in the Czech Republic.
Russia Hopes US Will Pull Missile Defense - 'Putin hopes for better ties with US under Obama.' In other words, Putin expects Obama to be soft on defense, specifically in regard to planned missile defense sites in US-friendly Poland and the Czech Republic.
