Monitor The Strategic Trends
Introduction:
Modern Technology has made it possible for countries all over the world to possess the means for controlling their own populations and to threaten other nations with mass destruction. It no longer matters whether a nation is rich or poor, large or small, first world or third world. Almost anyone can make or purchase weapons that 50 years ago could not even be imagined.
These new weapons include not only military-style weaponry like nuclear missiles, tanks, aircraft, naval vessels, and the like; but also inexpensive and readily available biological and chemical weapons. In addition, high-tech weapons like night vision goggles, tracking devices, surveillance cameras, communication innovations, and computerized data bases are relatively easy to obtain for so-called peaceful applications and then transferred for use in military or police operations.
The days of the Cold War seem tame by comparison as one no longer knows who is on what side. The bipolar world of post-World War II basically pitted two power centers against each other and only a few nations failed to align with one side or the other. Today we see many intertwining alliances where even allies threatening war with each other on occasion. Nations which were only bit players in the Cold War struggle are now posing a major threat to once invincible giants like the United States and Russia.
As technology becomes more and more sophisticated, it is not hard to picture how the prophesied "man of lawlessness" could become a global dictator, capable of controlling individuals anywhere in the world. The chilling thought of what might have happened during World War II had Hitler possessed today's technology should bring to mind the power that this coming world leader will possess.

NEW!
Iran Faces New Sanctions - The US government says Iran's response to an incentives package aimed at defusing a dispute over its nuclear program is unacceptable, making the prospect of new sanctions more likely.
Pakistan Denies Khan Nuclear Claim - Pakistan's military has denied a claim by Abdul Qadeer Khan, the architect of the country's nuclear programme, that the army supervised a shipment of centrifuges to North Korea in 2000. The denial came on Saturday, a day after Khan claimed the army, which was under Pervez Musharraf, the president, had "complete knowledge" of the shipment.
US Ships Food Aid to North Korea - A US ship bearing 37,000 tons of wheat has arrived in North Korea, officials said yesterday, the first installment in what is scheduled to be a major expansion of international food aid in the closed totalitarian country. On Thursday, Kim Jong Il's government handed over a long-delayed declaration that disclosed some details about its plutonium production. On Friday, it blew up a cooling tower at a disabled nuclear plant. The declaration prompted President Bush to ease some trade sanctions and begin a process to take North Korea off a list of countries that are officially designated as sponsors of terrorism.
US Military Nuclear Weapon Parts Missing - The US Military cannot locate hundreds of sensitive nuclear missile components, officials close to the Pentagon say, according to a published report in The Financial Times. One official said the number of missing components was more than 1,000.
Pakistan Faces Economic Hardship - Pakistan (the only Islamic nation with known nuclear weapons capabilities) will freeze its defense budget for the year, the prime minister said, a move that comes as the country faces severe economic problems. After years of sizzling economic growth, Pakistan is now challenged by large trade and budget deficits, chronic power shortages and double-digit inflation.
Syria to Block IAEA From Probing Nuclear Sites - Syria has told fellow Arab countries that it will not permit an International Atomic Energy Agency probe to extend beyond a suspected nuclear site bombed by Israel, despite agency interest in three other suspect locations. The IAEA wants to investigate information that Syria may have three other undeclared atomic facilities
Iran Nuke Plans Could Trigger Mideast Arms Race - Iran's nuclear program could trigger a race to develop atomic weapons in the Middle East. The International Institute for Strategic Studies noted that 13 countries had announced new or revived plans to pursue or explore civilian nuclear energy over an 11-month period between February 2006 and January 2007.
Iran Could Have Nukes by '09 - With Iran racing forward with its nuclear program, Israel now believes the Islamic Republic will master centrifuge technology and be able to begin enriching uranium on a military scale this year. The new assessment moves up Israel's forecasts on Teheran's nuclear program by almost a full year - from 2009 to the end of 2008. According to the new timeline, Iran could have a nuclear weapon by the middle of next year.
Iran Says It Will "Eliminate" Israel if Attacked - Iran will respond to any military attack from Israel by "eliminating" the Jewish state, a senior army commander said on Tuesday. Some analysts have speculated that Israel might attack Iran to stop its nuclear activities, which the West fears are a front for weapons development. Iran, which does not recognize Israel, insists it wants nuclear technology only for electricity.
Laser Plane Could Destroy Tanks from 10 Miles - The United States Defense Department has developed a prototype of an aircraft armed with a laser gun that could destroy tanks 10 miles away. The ten-centimeter-wide beam will heat targets almost instantly to thousands of degrees and will slice through metal even at maximum range. It is intended both for battlefield use and for missile defense.
Human Rights Probe Stirs Controversy - South Korea's National Human Rights Commission will investigate alleged human rights abuses in North Korea for the first time by interviewing hundreds of defectors living in the South. International human rights advocacy groups have accused communist North Korea of having one of the worst human rights records in the world. The new probe comes amid a deadlock in international talks aimed at convincing North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons programs.
UN Council to OK New Iran Sanctions - UN diplomats say the Security Council will approve new sanctions against Iran for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment. But the timing is uncertain and the resolution may not get unanimous support.
India Tests New SLBM - India has successfully test-fired an indigenously developed, nuclear-capable submarine-launched ballistic missile, according to the Indian Ministry of Defence. Since the Indian Navy does not yet have a submarine capable of firing an SLBM, the test launch of the K 15 (Sagarika) missile was conducted from a underwater platform.
Pakistan Nuclear Staff Go Missing - Two employees of Pakistan's atomic energy agency have been abducted in the north-western region near the Afghan border. At the time of their capture they were conducting a geological survey. The technicians went missing on the same day as Pakistan's ambassador to Afghanistan, Tariq Azizuddin, was reportedly abducted in the same region.
US Presses NK on Syria - The United States, alarmed by mounting evidence that North Korea gave nuclear assistance to Syria, has rejected pressure from some of its partners in six-nation talks to compromise on an overdue declaration of Pyongyang's nuclear activities.

Ahmadinejad: Israel's Days are Numbered - Iran is approaching the "peak" in its nuclear program and will not yield to Western pressure to halt its activities, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Wednesday. The Iranian president also noted that Israel's days were numbered and that it has reached its end. He was speaking two days after Iran received the eighth and final consignment of nuclear fuel from Russia for the Bushehr plant. Tehran has said the plant will begin operation this year.
All Options Open on Iran - Prime Minister Ehud Olmert warned Monday that all options are open when it comes to keeping Iran from obtaining atomic weapons, his clearest sign yet that Israeli could use force against a nation considered among its most serious threats.
