Technology Breakthrough:

The Flight of the SWAN

by Chuck Missler

As many of you have discovered, the resources available on the Internet have proven to be of inestimable value to anyone seeking to learn, and the serious Biblical inquirer is no exception.

Most of you have discovered our website (www.khouse.org), the Blue Letter Bible, and the other resources that are now available worldwide.

Several years ago we began our pioneering commitment to the Internet, and we plan to continue developing additional resources which are consistent with our mission statement:

To create, develop, and distribute materials to stimulate, encourage, and facilitate serious study of the Bible as the inerrant Word of God.

In order to provide a continuity of service-even under potentially adverse conditions-we have also been planning additional servers in offshore locations, with the first one scheduled for New Zealand. (It is interesting how the Lord works: it appears that we have an opportunity that could only have been orchestrated by Him!)

What Is SWANsatTM?

Several major technological breakthroughs are leading to the development of an extremely advanced communication satellite system, the "Super Wide Area Network" satellite (SWANsatTM), which will provide vastly expanded Internet access over the entire Planet Earth.

This system will employ "next generation" satellites on geostationary orbits over the U.S., Europe and New Zealand. They will operate in the W-band (92-95 Ghz for the uplink, and 102-105 Ghz for the downlink). This extremely high frequency frontier is allocated, but unused so far.

One of the many characteristics of this entirely digital system is that it will directly interconnect individuals through hand-held units that will include two-way video as well as essentially all other modes of communication.

Advancing Technologies

Advanced CODECing technologies are erasing the technological boundaries and are melding together the broadcast, networking, and telecommunications industries.

Furthermore, the combined paradigm shifts from institutionally to individually directed communication; broadcasting to narrow-casting; and, from fixed systems to wireless systems, all collectively militate toward a seamless integration of an omnisystem that will integrate all present forms into a hybrid of both mobile and fixed communications technologies.

Plus, the quantum leaps in improved bandwidth for the Internet will stagger the imagination as they are realized.

Although it will still be several years before it's operational, Koinonia House has been appointed to administer the satellite over New Zealand and this will improve access to our facilities from anywhere in the world.

We believe that this project will prove of profound value for churches, schools, home schoolers, and home Bible studies.

SWANsatTM is planning to offer its services on a non-profit associate membership basis to any public, private, or home school and to their students, alumni, or employees and their families. Memberships will also be offered to non-profit, tax exempt, public benefit, scientific, religious, or educational organizations and their members, constituents, employees, and supporters and their families.

(Corporations may sponsor their customers, employees, and shareholders as non-member associates.)

While this project is still in the early stages, the implications for the Body of Christ in general, and Koinonia House in particular, are truly exciting! Please keep all this in prayer. We will, of course, keep you informed as it progresses.
