Nothing could have prepared us for the horrors that we were about to witness on the morning of 7 October. As the news services began to report the terrifying attack on innocent Israeli citizens, our hearts were filled with anguish as we considered the seriousness of the situation.

On January 27, 1945, the Soviets entered Auschwitz. What they found, in this, now the best known of the Nazi death camps, were the weakest of the still living, corpses, and the remains of the vast machinery of mass murder.

As Israel celebrates her national birthday on May 14th, we acknowledge that one of the greatest miracles of the Bible is before our very eyes: the continuing existence of the Jewish people.

Psalm 83 describes a continuing conflict between Israel and its neighbors which climaxes with a final victory for Israel over its adversaries. It is a prayer in which Israel pleads for deliverance from a group of nations that are in union for the singular purpose of destroying her.

There are more Bible passages pronouncing judgment on the Edomites than on any other nation.1 But who are they? What relevance do they have for us today? As diligent students of the Word of God, it is essential for us to understand who they are and what eschatological implications they may have on our present geopolitical horizon.

The shifting geopolitical winds during the past few months have once again raised the specter of Ezekiel’s “Magog” invasion of Israel.

"So, where are we?" This is perhaps the most cogent question that could be asked about the Middle East after a year of peace process go-arounds, collapses, violent attacks and reprisals: all of which ended a decade of "no-war."

Israel will celebrate her Independence Day on the Fourth of Iyar, which is May 4th on our calendar (May 1995). (The modern state of Israel was born on May 14, 1948 on our calendar, but it was the Fourth of Iyar on hers.) The celebrations this year, however, are likely to be a bit muted with an atmosphere of "sell-out," which has resulted from the so-called "Peace Negotiations."
